having been to both brazil and argentina i get the sense that argentina is a much fairer society, without the massive poverty one can find in brazil, nor the obscene gap between the very wealthy and the very poor. buenos aires itself feels 100 times safer than either saop paulo or rio, and has an elegance and charm that makes it at times feel like an old european capital, like madrid or lisboa. nonetheless, it is still latin america, and that means it has the poverty that expresses itself occasionally in the form of kids begging on streets, elderly people lying in parks, and the more disturbing kidnapping that differentiates crime and poverty in latin america from crime and poverty in the us or europe... Posted by Picasa

ba is definitely a city of the night. i dont think i ever dined before 10, and in the month or so i was there it became habitual to leave the flat at 11, meet friends for drinks around 1130, and make a 1am reservation for some lean slabs of beef and generously endowed mojitos. there are some very cool bars and restaurants, though i thought they were a bit too much like the trendy places one finds in any majour european or american cities. Posted by Picasa

there are a million little parks in buenos aires. open gardens in stately homes, and everyone seemed to have a beautiful sculpture. art is everywhere in this city, from the parks, to the bars and the gloriously passionate sounds of the tangos and boleros which grace the air. Posted by Picasa
